Graphite details

I am an artist from Echuca, working with watercolour, natural pigment and graphite to create abstract landscapes. My works are an exploration into the changes occurring within the landscape, derived from the mappings of sights and sounds, marks from blind contour studies, observations of the environment, and the collection of pigments.

Employing the characteristics of the landscape, I expose the paper to the environment, allowing natural tannins from native flora and found objects to develop and imprint the surface. Over the course of days and weeks, I apply washes of watercolour, allowing them to saturate and dry, and through each application the colours and textures layer and adapt, mimicking the narrative of time and of an evolving terrain well marked and worn from seasonal changes and natural interventions. In between layers I work to erode areas through rubbings; exposing buried marks and further saturating the muted colours and textures of the Australian bush. Using various forms of graphite, gestural marks and lines are applied, and I work intuitively to recapture the movements and sounds of the birds and insects, and explore the interplay between the wind and the trees.

My works are a meditative reflection of my time in the environment, creating an immersive and sensory experience to bring the viewer into a gestural landscape of time, change and movement.
